The title Women From Mars is obviously taken from the bestseller
novel "Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus". In the
book, the author explains that women and men are different creatures
and that to be able to be compatible, they must understand what
makes the opposite sex tick. In the film, they exploit this idea
and try to make the chauvinistic men try to understand what makes
women tick, but what they don't realise is that a good film doesn't
always come out from a good idea.
Tom Kan (Ekin Cheng), Ah Fei (Michael Wong) and
Siu Bo (Cheung Tat Ming) are typical men: even though they have
girlfriends, they love to flirt and bed with other women. They can't
help this, they say, it is in their genes. So one day, they are
sent to hell by hell's angels Louis Koo and Shu Qi, but the devil
has no room for them, so they are sent back to Earth, minus their
god-given manhoods as their punishment for cheating women.
Cue plenty of wails and hysterical rantings from
our trio, who try to plead with the angels to get their willies
back, because they say, without them, they are not men. To punish
them further, Tom Kan is given the hormones of a woman (experiencing
periods etc), Siu Bo suddenly becomes pregnant, while Fei's girlfriend
constantly demands sex with him (but since he hasn't got a willy,
he can't satisfy her and she leaves him).
Of course it is not as simple as that, as each
of our temporary eunuchs have their own external problems as well.
Their only escape is to get their girlfriends to say the magical
words "I love you" to them. But it must come deep from
the heart and be true for it to break the curse.
This film was made to help out fellow actor Ng
Chi Hung with his debts, so a host of HK (and non-HK) stars were
willing to put in cameos. The effect is rather pointless, as even
dozens of stars appearing together cannot turn a dud film into a
hit. The problem with the film is the lack of a perfectly good plot,
and everything just seemed to be thrown in together, hoping the
end result is something to look at. It is not pretty at all, and
the storyline is far from anything we'd call good entertainment.
Having the three leads lose their manhoods may
be a good idea, but the effects are not as funny as it seems, and
the whole sorry affair becomes a drag when these three guys realise
just what jerks they have been and try to work very hard to repent
their past deeds by becoming very morose and pitiful. I'm sorry,
but the magic doesn't work on me, and I find their excuses pathetic.
All in all, Women from Mars is a disappointing
excuse for a comedy. Don't waste time with this little fella, head
for something better instead.
