The makers of The Wesley's
Mysterious File must have watched countless episodes of the X-Files,
or some other sci-fi pulp fiction, because this film is full of
technical mumbo-jumbo and the usual cliched cold-blooded aliens
versus good-natured aliens plotlines.
Sadly, the plot is rather silly, even for a sci-fi
film. Two Blue-blood aliens had crash-landed on Earth some 600 years
ago after a meteor shower plunged their spaceship into Earth's orbit.
They were out looking for the Blue-blood bible that would enable
them to destroy the Toxin Warlock group, a devastating cold-blooded
species that had invaded their peaceful planet.
Presently, a couple of the Toxin group (Mark Cheng
and Almen Wong) have landed on Earth to search for the Bible, and
in the middle of all this is Wesley (Andy Lau), an E.T expert from
the U.N, who is attracted to one of the female Blue-bloods named
Fong (Rosamund Kwan). Together they must unite to defend the mystic
Bible from falling into the Toxin's hands.
Let me say it out first - this film is very bad.
Come on, let's admit it. Hong Kong filmmakers cannot make sci-fi
films; they just don't have the culture and the imagination to do
such a thing, just as Hollywood can't make kung-fu films. Sci-fi
is pretty much a Western conception, and only they can do it with
such panache. Just look at the history: Star Wars, 2001, Alien,
Terminator, Independence Day, MIB etc. What can Hong Kong come up
with? Wesley's Mysterious File !
The biggest problem with the film is that not
much is put into the development of the characters, and it seems
that most of the budget has been spent creating the crappy CGI monsters
and other such useless effects. The plot is very flimsy, with so
much emphasis on describing science-fiction terms and theoretical
circumstances that nothing is left over for any plot advancement.
What's funny is that it seems so serious, without that ounce of
humour that would have lightened things up, and the worse of it
is that the actors do not know what they are saying or doing. They
just seem to be moving on automation from one scene to another,
with the boring sci-fi plot forcing them into the static background.
Unfortunately, there are more holes in the plot
than in a nebula full of black holes, with most situations being
very questionable. It is just so bad to watch that you'd think why
they bothered with it in the first place. Sci-fi is not Hong Kong's
forte, leave it to the experts, guys.
I just don't like to be so critical, but there
are so many things to be critical of. For example, how did the Toxin
gang know that the Blue-bloods are hiding on Earth? Why did one
of the Blue-bloods later betray the other, knowing that the Toxin
gang are ruthless murderers? Is it really possible for an alien
and a human being to copulate? How come we never see the Blue-bloods
real bodies? And why are Shu Qi and Roy Cheung's English so bad,
when they are supposed to be FBI elite agents?
So many questions, and still you feel frustrated
at the end, knowing that you have wasted money on this pile of sci-fi
drivel. Simply put, this is just damn awful, and I'd advise you
to stay well clear.
