This is not really a sequel to the original Visible
Secret, even though it stars Eason Chan again. It is just basically
another ghost story, but given the same name.
Eason Chan and his wife Ah Ching (Jo Koo) moves
into a new apartment, and everything seems fine (don't they always).
Soon, Eason sees strange visions inside his apartment, and his wife
begins to act very abnormally. A girl named September (Cherrie Yin)
from Eason's past turns up unexpectedly, and the both of them try
to unravel the mystery that has inflicted Ah Ching. It soon turns
out that Ah Ching is possessed by a dead spirit, and Eason must
do his best to save his wife. However, there is also something deadly
wrong with September herself.
The first Visible Secret, which was directed by
Ann Hui, was no masterpiece itself, but the direction and set-pieces
were well above average and was a good thriller / ghost story. This
sequel tries hard to copy Ann Hui's style, but fails to be as inventive
as the original and falls flat simply because of the bad plot.
Most of the story is set within the apartment,
and this is where it hurts the film most. The tone of the film is
locked on it being scary, but it isn't, and a lot of the scary moments
are completely plagiarised from older films. There doesn't seem
to be a single scene in the film that makes your skin crawl or even
make you jumpy. The filmmakers needs a lesson in how to set a scene,
and I suggest that they go see some Alfred Hitchcock films first.
Visible Secret 2 isn't completely unwatchable
because it does have its moments, but this is a far inferior product
to the original, which in turn, was no great film in itself.
