The first feature length film to star teenage
boys' pin-ups Twins in this romantic drama about teenage love. The
plot is similar to Gimme Gimme, a recent film about teenage love
that was quite engaging and enjoyable. Summer Breeze is much of
the same, with cute leads Charlene Choi and Gillian Chung having
their hearts tested out by falling in love with completely unsuitable
candidates - which makes the film all the more funny.
Kammy (Chung) falls in love with middle-aged Danny
(Dave Wong), but doesn't understand his refusal to be with her.
She believes the age difference isn't really an issue, but he disagrees,
but as time goes by, he starts to fall in love with this sweet girl.
Kiki (Choi) falls for a teenage boy Ah Fung (Tsui),
who is very popular with the girls and is a known womaniser. However,
Kiki believes that Fung really loves her and she falls head over
heels in love with his rogue. But she soon realises that she is
just another fish in the ocean.
As romantic love stories go, Summer Breeze isn't
particularly bad, and there are plenty of light moments littered
throughout the film. The biggest problem with the film is that there
doesn't seem to be anything solid in the plot, and it just sort
of moves from one scene to another without really establishing much
chemistry between the characters.
The best moments are with Kammy with Danny, whose
dilemma in going out with a teenage girl plagues him to no end.
These scenes are the most funniest, but that cannot be said with
the Kiki and Fung relationship. Theirs is as stale as old bread,
and needs a good dose of energy to get things moving. Particularly
at fault is the character Fung himself, who comes across as an arrogant
shit-head. He deserves no sympathy whatsoever, and we are all rooting
for Kiki to dump him soonest. It's a shame because Tsui was far
better in Gimme Gimme.
Summer Breeze is a success purely because
it is made for the teenage market, and for fans of the Twins. School-children
will like this film far better than adults since the subject matter
is more likened to their way of life. For us old-timers, Summer
Breeze is nothing more than a moment's breeze of light entertainment.
