May (Sammi Cheng) inherits a vast fortune
when her rich husband drowns in a scuba-diving accident. She's also
been given a seat as a director at her husband's large company,
but May is not at all happy, and she goes on a depressive state
of eating, slumping, and stealing (from her own company's stores).
In other words, she acts like a spoilt rich bitch.
One night she crashes her husband's beloved car
and nearly gets herself killed, but she survives, and from that
day forth, she can see ghosts with her left eye. Call it divine
intervention. The first ghost she sees is a bloke called Wong (Lau
Ching Wan), and is someone she knew from primary school. Wong pesters
her until she accepts the fact that she has the unnatural ability
to see ghosts.
The idea of a person being able to see ghosts
is not new, and unfortunately, in this film it is even more cliched.
May spends most of the time running around acting scared, and the
rest being unhappy and moody. Her relationship with the ghost Wong
simply does not have enough chemistry to work, and the dialogue
is not at all funny, resulting in some really dire situations. The
ending tries to put in a clever dramatic u-turn, but alert viewers
would've already guessed the outcome.
The change of character from cool bitch to nice
girl seems irrelevant, and although they try to conjure up some
emotional support, everything looks tacked on and without thought.
They simply can't decide whether to make this a comedy or a drama,
because it is neither. Too much thought is placed on 'redeeming
oneself' and not enough is placed on it being actually any good.
The comedy slant is not funny at all, and some of the situations
they get up too is just not entertaining enough for us to really
care.
Lau Ching Wan doesn't get much to do with his
character (probably because his character is dead), and the fact
that the plot has zero believability. Other characters are just
as numb, and doesn't add much to the proceedings.
For the past two years, this is the worse
Sammi Cheng film I've seen. Maybe her reign as top box-office queen
is at an end? If she continues to make dud movies like this one
and Marry a Rich Man, then surely it is just a matter of time before
she is thrown off her perch.
