Director Fruit Chan continues his love affair with stories focusing
on prostitutes making a living in Hong Kong. From his past work it
is easy to see the fascination that Chan has with prostitution, after
all, his previous film Durian Durian was practically a film devoted
to a prostitute.
Hollywood Hong Kong is set in a shanty town called
Tai Hom Village which is situated right next to the modern sky-rise
residential towers known simply as Plaza Hollywood (which is in
East Kowloon). This village, to be shortly torn down and rebuilt
by the government, resides many villagers who make a living by owning
small shops in the area. Boss Chu and his two sons are examples
of these people, and they spend their normal lives by roasting their
own barbecue pork and selling them to the public.
The story basically kicks off when a girl enters
their idyllic lives. Obviously her appearance and accent betrays
her as a mainlander, but her youthfulness and sex appeal are qualities
that attracts these men. After all, it is not everyday that these
people get a real-life glimpse of a girl oozing sex-appeal. Boss
Chu and his two sons soon fall under her sway, but the funny aspect
is in the age difference: Boss Chu is old enough to be her father,
while his first son is a fat-arsed teenager, and the youngest is
still in primary school. However, the girl's charms are enough to
bewitch the three of them, and the two elder Chus find themselves
in a lucky (or unfortunate) position to have sex with her, seemingly
at her initiation.
Fruit Chan likes to make films about normal people,
and when you watch his films you would often notice that there seem
to be a documentary feel to the imagery. He likes to dump the viewer
into the lives of these ordinary folk, who you may have bumped into
or may have bought pork from. Yet the underlying notion is what
these people get up to in the background. Boss Chu is really a pervert;
he likes young girls, and the appearance of this young mainland
girl is definitely a turn-on for this fat bastard, whose only entertainment
is the solicitation with local prostitutes.
What Fruit Chan wants the viewers to understand
is that lust is a two-edged blade that can easily hurt you. Succumb
to it and you will reap the rewards as well as the consequences.
Each of the characters, except the little boy, is an example of
what it will get you in the end, and to a certain sad extent, I
find it mildly amusing that a girl (and not even a great looking
one, in my opinion) can have such an effect on these people. She
uses her power to milk all the benefits by ensnaring the lot of
them in a highly profitable scam.
But Hollywood Hong Kong isn't really that
good, and there are plenty of boring parts littered around. The
first part is quite interesting as we see how the girl seduces the
men, but the second half soon degenerates into disbelievability
as each improbable moment happens by. It is amusing at times but
in a dark way, and it'll have you shaking your head in bemusement.
Not on a par with Chan's previous work.
