This is actually a remake of an old Hong Kong movie, about a lady
pretending to be pregnant just to keep her job. The modern version
stars Miriam Yeung, one of the funniest and brightest female icons
today. She plays Fong Lai Kuen, (same name as the character she
played in Love Undercover !) who works in an advertising agency.
Her boss is Wu (Edison Chen), a young misfit who would rather bake
a cake than sit in a boardroom.
When an incident requires Wu to fire her, she
convinces everybody that she is pregnant, as under the Labour Law,
pregnant women cannot be fired until they give birth. Day by day,
Fong finds it increasingly difficult to keep her lie, especially
as when her belly is supposed to grow. Wu feels sympathetic towards
her, and even lends his massive family empty mansion for her to
live in after he sees where she really lives.
It gets to the point that Fong has to continue
her lie just to get an important contract for her company, and they
soon pick her to be in the ads, just because the client, Miss Ho
(Cheung Po Kin - the star of the original Dummy Mommy film) is pregnant
herself. But however, all things must come to an end, and Fong's
lie will be found out. The fun is how they end it, and what the
consequences are for Fong.
Dummy Mommy is really a very silly movie, with
most situations quite implausible. But because it is meant to be
an all-out comedy, every situation is milked for all its worth,
and what we end up with is one huge enjoyable affair. Fong's lie
gets extremely out of hand, and the scenes gets outrageous every
time. The funny moments are witnessing the juggling act of Fong
trying to fob off everyone, while trying to maintain her own sanity.
All of the main stars and co-stars are great in
this movie, making every moment a scene of hilarity. Miriam Yeung
is her usual self (she doesn't seem to have a method of acting),
while Edison Chen puts in a convincing performance as the rich kid
who prefers to be a cook than a manager. The rest of the cast is
wholly funny at all times, and makes the overall film very light-headed
and enjoyable. It is rather silly, but it is these films that usually
puts a smile on your face every time without fail.
