Despite
the comedic title of the film, this is no comedy. Instead it is
a well enacted tale of friendship, loyalty and righteousness. Nick
Cheung plays Fred, a cop who's been undercover for more than five
years now and is understandly a little rough around the edges. When
an operation goes wrong, Fred finds himself being framed for his
partner's death and a missing suitcase which contains HK$20 million
dollars. Under difficult circumstances he realises that the only
person who can help him is Dr. Ko (Francis Ng), a police coroner.
The two unlikely partners try to solve the case but soon find themselves
on the run from the police. With luck, they figure out that the
mastermind behind everything is Fred's own superior.
This
is a good little film. For once, we don't get to endure Nick Cheung's
imitation of Stephen Chow, nor do we get to see his often puerile
comedic antics. This is a straight and straight acting affair for
Cheung and he equips himself well into his character. We actually
sympathise with him as he tries to avoid the authorities while trying
to clear his name.
The
surprise part in this film is the cast against type of Francis Ng
in the role of the rich but lonely coroner. With his well-pressed
clothing and bow-ties, he seems out of character, but with a versatile
actor such as Ng, he seems to be able to pull it off with ease.
Everyone who has seen Ng in his numerous portrayals of triad gangsters
and hard-boiled cops will be pleasantly surprised.
Clean
my name, Mr Coroner is a great story of two complete opposites,
who find themselves warming to each other in a manner they wouldn't
have perceived possible earlier on. Fred finds Ko a nuisance, completely
out of reality and a goody-two-shoes to boot; Ko finds Fred rough,
without manners and is simply rude. But fate brings them together
and they soon forge a solid friendship based on trust and understanding.
Ti
Lung turns up a good performance as Officer Lau who frames Fred
and is the real culprit behind the stolen money, although he did
it for a real good reason. And in the end, it is the good-heartedness
of Fred that he lets his superior go.
Stephanie
Che is the love interest of Fred, and although she brings with her
a cool resilience to Fred's charms, she soon finds herself warming
to this lonely wanderer, and could not help but take Fred and Ko
into her home when they are on the run.
The
film offers little in the way of action, and is more of a drama
suspense than a gritty actioner. However, there are also some plotholes
throughout the film, but you can't expect perfection from such a
low-budget film. Nevertheless, very enjoyable.
