BIO COPS (2000)

If you have a somewhat passing interest in video games, you would have no doubt heard of a series of games called Resident Evil (Bio-hazard). The first part of this game featured a group of crack SWAT-team like heroes that after being hounded by unspeakable evils find themselves in a large manor house. In this house they encounter horrifying beasts and other man-eating ghouls. They discover that it was the cause of a bio-experiment gone horribly wrong. The second part of the series is set in a police station in a town plagued by zombies, and it is up to a rookie cop and a girl to fight off these evils. Bio-cops is loosely based on this second part of the Resident Evil saga. I say loosely because there are similarities between the film and game, but they try not to be so conspicuous about it.

All of the laughable action occur in the police station where the main evil doer wrecks havoc by chomping on his victims and turning them into fellow zombies. It is up to a rookie cop Marco (Stephen Fung), a triad fellow (Sam Lee) and two other girls to stop the advances of the powerful zombie.

Bio-cops is a great laugh. This is a film not to be taken seriously and it shows in its use of humour and hilarious situations. Production values are low and it shows. At a guess, this film was probably shot and finished post-production in less than a week. A lot of the script is based on the verbal exchanges between Fung and Lee; their dialogues seem more ab-libs than memorising from a script.

Some of the scenes are a bit too serious for my taste and could have been given a dose of humour which would've lighten the mood, given that this film is no serious zombie-fest. Stephen Fung could have been more funny, but he acts a bit woodenly at times, but I thought the star of the show had to be Sam Lee who was simply hilarious throughout the film. He seems to be able to find something funny to say in any given situation which sets a consistent tone.

Bio-cops is a cheap film; made for cheap laughs and for a quick buck. The script (what script) is full of plotholes, and the direction is often poor. The set-pieces are also poorly lit and the action is purely laughable. Overall, Bio-cops is enjoyable enough.
