Luna (Kelly Chen) is a columnist for a local newspaper. One day
while browsing through an antique store she finds an old record
that was once bought by her and given to her ex-boyfriend. She believes
it is fate that reunites her with her record, so she wants to buy
it. However, the record has already been bought by a local radio
DJ, Cheung Yung (Aaron Kwok), and he steadfastly refuses to let
her have it.
He
doesn't let the matter drop though, and broadcasts the record on
air; meanwhile demeaning her with some carefully chosen choice of
words. Understandably she is furious, and writes in her column what
an obnoxious, arrogant pig that he is. Thus begins an amusing love-hate
relationship between the two; like a kind of tennis match, they
humiliate each other on radio and in print back and forth. As they
constantly try to outdo the other by trying to find weaknesses,
they ultimately discover that they actually have more in common
than first meets the eye.
And
I hate you so isn't a bad film by any means, and in most cases,
it is an amusing romantic comedy. But what lets it down is that
there doesn't seem to have that spark of chemistry between the two
leads, which somehow disappoints. The sniping between the two could
have been more sharper, and the ending finishes a bit too abruptly
for my taste.
However,
there is a funny side story about the owner of the antique shop
(played by Teresa Mo), who is always on the lookout for potential
husband material, and was told to buy a dog to keep her company
instead. As it turns out, the dog really belongs to a guy called
Mo (Eric Tsang), who is also looking for a suitable woman. When
the pair meet, a hilarious relationship ensues.
Overall,
the film has its funny moments, but there's better films around.
