After the poorly executed but stylishly designed Skyline Cruisers,
Leon Lai is back to what he does best - starring in a romantic comedy.
This time round he plays OK Lai, a property salesman who cheats
and lies his way in and out of every situation. His life takes a
turn when he meets Wonderful (Cheung), a beautiful office clerk
whose luck with partners is just as bad as OK's.
By chance, they both meet a Tibetian Buddhist
who foretells the both of them that they will meet their fateful
partners in the very near future. But a case of mistaken identity
keeps the comedy antics flowing as Wonderful thinks OK is the rich
cousin of her boss. Both OK and Wonderful soon fall in love with
each other, but Wonderful still doesn't know what a lying two-faced
deceitful git he is. Fact is, OK tries to be sincere with Wonderful,
but could not shake off his habit of lying, and his mistaken identity
situation is becoming more and more dangerous by the minute.
The bubble finally bursts when OK is revealed
to be the cheat that he is by his on and off girlfriend, who is
the sister of Wonderful's boss. In a bid to woo back Wonderful,
OK goes for a transformation, by deciding not to lie anymore. Sounds
complicated? You needn't be, as Everyday is Valentine is a simple
romantic love story that doesn't stretch the imagination. Indeed
the plot is nothing original, and the film seems to focus more on
the comedy than the romance.
Leon Lai does his job quite convincingly as OK
Lai, but he is not a born comedian; he has to rely on others to
pull his jokes off, which are, fortunately, quite funny in some
scenes. However, his on-screen relationship with Cecilia Cheung
doesn't quite meet the expectations that an on-screen couple are
meant to have. In some instances, their role-play lacks that special
sparkle and often seems strained. Even the ending seems to be an
afterthought, and needn't be there in the final cut.
Marks should be given for the excellent supporting
cast which includes Ng Man-tat, Cheung Tat-ming, Yuen Kuei and Pinky
Cheung, amongst others. Everyday is Valentine is well thought out
- with some hilarious situations, but mostly you will find that
it is these that are worth watching than the actual romance between
OK Lai and Wonderful.
