Kwok is Peter, a bespectacled youngster who spends most of his time
playing computer games. Along with his best buddy Benny (Daniel Wu)
they are the owners of a computer shop, but Peter is more infatuated
with new technology, often spending thousands of dollars on these
new gadgets. Benny, on the other hand, is more interested in trying
to find his Miss Perfect. Peter has an older brother called Greg (Ray
Liu) who is a software programmer, and is very well respected.
The
story really starts to move when Greg is arrested on the suspicion
that he is a government spy. When Greg is killed by an anonymous
killer, Peter is on the chase to find who was behind it, which leads
to more people and more questions. When Greg's girlfriend Salina
(Phyllis Quek) turns up to help them, she persuades them into accepting
her as the person to find Greg's secrets, but can she be really
trusted? And who is Eric, (Lai Hing Chung), the person who keeps
trailing them, telling them that he is on their side? Not to mention
Kelvin, (Andrew Lin Hoi), the person who will stop at no cost to
get his hands on the software program developed by Greg for the
US Government.
2000
AD is a good thriller, moving from locations in Hong Kong to Singapore,
and the story is packed full of suspense and action. Kwok puts in
a great performance as Peter, the kid who hasn't a clue as to what
is going on, but has no choice but to find his brother's killer.
A person who is adept at using a lightgun in front of a TV than
firing a real gun, he does a pretty job in foiling the bad guys.
He must have played too much Gran Turismo as he takes the tricks
he learnt in the game and applies them fully on the real road. Daniel
Wu, who usually plays a more action-orientated role in his movies,
takes second stage in 2000AD, providing much of the comic relief,
as a person with strong relationship values but still couldn't find
a girlfriend. His on-screen younger sister, Janet (played by Choi
Lok Chi), has plenty of screen time, but doesn't really do much
except follow Peter around. A bit of a wasted ability I think.
As
with the other cast members, Francis Ng puts in a memorable performance
as the Police Inspector, and Ray Liu puts in a good cameo performance
as Peter's brother. Lau Wai Kwong is brilliant as the henchman of
Kelvin, who single-handedly kills Greg and a number of police officers
with his superior firepower. He follows that up with a great ambush
on Peter and Salina, killing Inspector Ng and all his men in the
shoot-out. In the end, he is the only bad guy to walk away, due
to his quick thinking. A splendid performance.
Overall,
2000AD is a well-crafted film with some plenty of good action sequences.
